Native Ame Hist, Pop Culture & MascPop Culture and Mascots (HIS 280)
Term: 2022-2023 Spring Term
Description
Fall 2025, Native American History Pop Culture. This course is an introduction to and multi-faceted examination of Native American history, popular culture, and mascots in the present-day United States from pre-European contact to the present. Its multiple themes also feature elements of archaeology, anthropology, social history, and religious and literary studies. Labels for Native Americans in myth, memory, and popular culture have created and perpetuated stereotypes such as the savage redskin and the noble Indian, and this course will also examine the widespread use of those stereotypes (including depictions of Native Americans as sports mascots) in depth—including the history of Newberry College athletic teams being known as the Newberry Indians from 1909 to 2009.
