Description

This course is centered around a significant aspect of everyday life in American history in the 20th century: social justice in American music and pop culture. It will analyze themes of anti-racism, anti-war, environmentalism, mass incarceration, anti-colonialism, indigenous rights, gender equality, feminist pop culture, LGBTQ rights, refugee rights, and class solidarity. The course will analyze a multitude of different genres such as Hip-Hop, Gospel, Rock, R&B, Folk, and Country music. The purpose of this course is to use art and music to analyze themes in history and the political and social climate of the time and to evaluate the impact the music has had on American citizens and their advocacy for social justice issues.
